wifi security- analysis of wep impacts

In the recent days, wireless networks (WiFi) are used in home and businesses for internet access. Most people think the network is secured with internet provider. Are they actually secured? The security is depends on the what security mechanism protects WiFi. Three different types modes to secure 1. WEP 2. WPA 3. WPA2 (Which method your home/office is having?) I have only discussed about weakness in the WEP.

WEP- Wired Equivalent Privacy – which provides basic encryption for WiFi. Is Your wireless encrypted with this method?, then your WiFi is vulnerable to attack.

This is the first solution (WEP) for WiFi encryption used in earlier days. The old laptops and PCs (Before 7 or 8 years) only support this method. Because there are some issues with hardwares. If you are still using this method (WEP), your network would be hacked easily. There is major flaw with WEP implementation. Its a open authentication system in which any one can make fake authentication with your router and easily get your WiFi Encryption key. Not only get your wifi key, can also view the transaction you made through the router. This process can be done within 5 minutes!!!

Most of the wireless networks are secured with WPA. But still many wireless networks are poorly secured. For instance most of the o2 wireless broadbands, Belkins are not secured well. Also some of the BT home and Business broadband connections aren’t secured well. BT Business Hubs are in worst case.

Because BT connections has dual wireless connections by default (BT business and BT Fusion). One is secured with WEP and another connection(Fusion) is secured with WPA (which is more secure than WEP). These two connections (BT business and BT Fusion) are using different methods to protect WiFi. But the worst case is WiFi key to access both connections are same. I already mentioned hacking of WEP key is done within 5 minutes. So anybody get access to BT Business WiFi could also gain access to Fusion network. This is thehigh priority warning to BT and o2 broadband customers to avoid being lost their confidentiality and identity. In order to secure your WiFi connection access your router and change security settings. Also try to change default network password and router password. If you not sure about the router settings, call your ISP (internet service provider ex.virgin, BT, O2 etc), they can help you in case.
