Jobhop Jobhop's blog : You’ve Got Candidate Fallout Syndrome
Candidate fall out syndrome leaves you tired, confused and clammy.
Other symptoms include:
- Irritability
- Stress
- High blood pressure
- Insomnia
- Loss of appetite
- Headaches
Many people think that “burying ones head in the sand” is a cure, let me tell you this...It isn’t.
Candidate fallout syndrome is very real and sadly, it’s very common.
What brings CFS on is entirely preventable but for some reason many people tend to ignore the warning signs.
If you can stop candidate fallout then you will prevent candidate fallout syndrome, prevention is better than a cure!
What causes candidate fallout syndrome?
You’re not engaging
The candidate journey starts at first touch. That could be a tweet on Twitter from a candidate who’s researching potential career possibilities and has a question to ask.
The candidate asking the question could have a personality that matches the company, they could have the right skills that the company likes to look out for and they could have the experience or connections that any employer would do a little dance for. But you will never get to meet this candidate because you never saw the tweet and because they never heard from you they went to work at your competitors. Perhaps they tried to connect with you on Linkedin but instead of getting back to them immediately you connected with them two weeks later, big mistake, they’re now engaging regularly with your competitor and they really like them.
You’re not respectful
The candidate has spent ages filling in the application form, preparing their CV, showcasing their online profiles and you have no respect for that.
When they call or email to ask if their hard work has been received, you get the receptionist to say you’re in a meeting and then you never call or email back. No candidate is going to want to work for someone who doesn’t respect their time and effort and gives them a wild goose chase.
Your interview style is terrible
“If you were a dog, what breed would you be?” You think that being off the wall makes you a cool interviewer ...errgh no! stop it now. Perhaps you spill off the cliche interview questions “Where do you see yourself in five years time” One day someone will turn round and say “in a much better place than you are today!” so stop it, please! Your interview questions will get talked about and laughed about, not in a good way. There are some interviewers who love the power they feel whilst interviewing, they actually like the fact that the poor candidate is quaking in their shiny shoes. You need to take responsibility and admit that you’re just not very good at interviewing and understand that’s why the good candidates change their minds and decide to take another offer elsewhere.
You’re insulting
You interview badly then you offer the candidate a lot less than they’re are worth. If you completely insult them then they’ve fallen out with you before they leave the building, you can consider them a complete candidate fallout.
You’re too slow
The interview went brilliantly, you’ve told them that you’ll be “in touch soon” but secretly you know the candidate was heads above everybody else and you can’t envisage getting a better candidate. Even though you know that you still drag our heels and by the time you get back to the candidate they’ve changed their mind and have decided to stay put in the job they’re currently in. You don’t understand it, why are they staying put? Probably because they realised that they didn’t want to work for a company which takes forever to make a decision, in todays world you can’t afford to be slow!
