Jobhop Jobhop's blog : Why Candidates Have No Interest In Your Website

Why do your competitors get all the talent?

When someone is looking for a new job or to change a job, what’s the first thing they’ll do? That’s right, they’ll do their research online.  They might come across your website if you’re lucky, but if there’s no careers page they’ll probably bounce right off. You may answer back that you have a jobs page, that’s not good enough, especially if that page just says “no jobs available at present” What happens next is simple and heart breaking, the candidate leaves your site and moves on to your competitors.

Candidates have no interest in your website because… basically, it sucks.

Marketing your company

Bill Gates once said “If I was left with $1 to spend, I would spend it on marketing”. Marketing is debatably the most important aspect of a company, it’s important you market the answer to ‘why anyone would want to work at your business’ perfectly. You need to highlight why anyone would choose your workplace over other competitors. You have to use your website to attract top talent for now and for the future, that’s why a job vacancies page simply isn’t good enough. Potential candidates want to see your mission, your CSR, the culture etc.. Think about attracting candidates for the jobs you'll have available six months down the line, when you get into that mindset you’ll constantly be marketing your business to attract talent at all times, this is how it should be.

Culture of the company

Many candidates don’t just want to know what jobs are available, before they apply for anything they also want to know about the culture of the company. Let them know at the very least the basics, like: Who works there, What’s the training like? Is it a flexible work place? Is there a running club after work? Do you promote healthy eating? Is the culture one of keeping fit and healthy or one of ongoing education? Every little bit of information helps, culture is important to candidates and your website should tell them all they need to know.

What type of employee do you usually hire?

By displaying who works already at your company on your career website will help to attract like minded people. Also by being completely transparent about what you look for when hiring is important, this helps to qualify them before any apply.

Perhaps have a gaming process for them to pass before applying, this will also help qualify your candidate. It could be something like 97% of the people who work here knew the answer to this question … then a question for them to answer. Once they submit the answer they can carry on to the next level if it’s a correct answer.

Your website should be a magnet for top talent not just an empty page saying “no vacancies”
