You’ve probably seen them, they’re everywhere #Alwayslate #amazeballs #TGIF #FF #Property #Fail #Pictureintheattic #PizzaPorn , they can look confusing and some may wonder what use they have.

The hashtag is actually a fantastic way to communicate on the different social media sites and they can definitely help a job seeker

By using the hashtag in front of a word or words clustered together in a tweet or a post on Google Plus or Instagram, it becomes a searchable link. For example if you click on the hashtag #PizzaPorn on Twitter you are subjected to a feed of people chatting about their best pizza ever and pizza photos to make you salivate! Go on I dare you.

What the hashtag does is to bring you into a conversation that's going on about a particular topic.

When you #hashtag a word or words, your message has the potential to reach many more people because it becomes a searchable link. Lots people could be searching for that hash tag therefore your message gets delivered to a new audience.

The platforms you can use hashtags on are:

  • Twitter  ..  This is where chatting with hashtags was born
  • Facebook
  • Google Plus
  • Instagram
  • Tumblr
  • Pinterest

So how can they help a job seeker?

You can use the #Hashtag to attract employers and recruiters or source #hashtags to connect with companies, recruiters, employers and employees.

Good #job #hashtags to use for sourcing:

As well as #UKjobs look for the hashtag in the location you want to work e.g #manchesterjobs #londonjobs #endinburghjobs #glasgowjobs and so on

You will also find that there will be hash tags for jobs in the industry you’re looking at e.g #marketingjobs #engineeringjobs #digitaljobs #surveyorjobs #salesjobs

You can include #Hashtags for attracting:

A sample message may be #Marketing Assistant  4yrs at Virgin Holidays seeking Marketing Managers role, wants #career ..see #CV (short link to your online profile or CV )

When job seeking always make sure the hashtag is relevant and on topic, always make sure it specific, don’t just hash tag #Job, include what type of job #Marketing #Job

Use #CV in the U.K and not #Resume

Do not use the same hash tag twice in the same post and never have more than three hash tags or your post will look like spam. The only time it would be acceptable is on Instagram or Vine where it’s quite common to have more than three hashtags on each post.

Another way to use the #hashtags would be with industry conferences. There are so many about from farming, marketing, health to technology, tourism, dentistry and fashion, take your pick! As a job seeker you should get along to some of these conferences and events to network and get known. If however you can’t get to some of them, you can still network and get known by attending virtually using the event hashtag. Event #hashtag chatting is usually done on Twitter and it’s a brilliant way of making connections.

Find out the #hashtag of the event, this is usually found on the events web site or the industry magazine that it’s being advertised in. If you still can’t find it call the organisers and ask them, they will have one, unless it’s an industry which hasn’t moved with technology!

You’ll find that you can start connecting to exhibitors and people who are attending the event by using the hashtag even before the opening day. On the day really get involved, make sure you comment on discussions, RT (retweet) what others say and make those important connections. It doesn’t finish there because people will talk about the event for days after using the #hashtag, make sure you keep connected.

Remember it’s not just text you can use hashtags for it’s also photos and videos. Instagram and Vine are great examples however you’ll see them used a lot with photos on Twitter. As a jobseeker #hashtag photos of work you’ve done or projects completed, use the relevant #hashtags and get found.  So get #Hashtagging !!
