Underemployment what does it mean?
Figures state that there are 3million plus people “underemployed” across the U.K
Our economy is approximately 3% smaller than it was at the beginning of the recession in 2008.. What’s confusing is there’s more people working but our output is less, strange isn’t it??
Underemployment is literally people in employment who are working fewer hours. Many people are working a lot less hours than before, not by choice and they’re not very happy about it.
The Underemployed are literally the hidden victims because if they’re not part of the unemployment figures then everything is alright isn’t it?
Being underemployed puts a lot of strain on finances, which puts a strain on relationships, at work and at home. Underemployment leads to unhappy employees, long term career damage, less production, disgruntled customers and so on.
How do people become underemployed?
- Employers have had to cut their hours
- Have had to move from full time to part time
- People take any job available just to work
- Some people will even do a couple of part time jobs that still don’t add up to the hours they should be doing
The top jobs for underemployment are
- Labourers,
- School crossing staff
- Cleaners
- Catering staff
- waiting staff
It seems that it’s gradually becoming a choice of no work or not enough work.
When we talk about the 2.51m unemployed we should also consider the 3m+ underemployed, it then becomes very clear to how much distress is being endured in the jobs market.
Underemployment is serious, it now affects 1 in 10 workers and it’s growing as the competition for jobs increases. Underemployment contributes to holding back the economy and is the reason why the unemployment figures look better than a few months ago.
