Jobhop Jobhop's blog : The Internet Of Things Needs You

The internet of things, which could mean virtually anything is perhaps better thought of as the internet of everything, but whatever you call it you have to look at where you fit into it and where you’ll be needed.

Don’t just think about what’s here now, consider how fast technology is changing everything, think ahead, think of a world where billions of devices are connected to the internet. Where can you fit in? Perhaps your ideal dream job isn’t yet created, if it isn’t it soon will be because we’re moving that fast, so be ready for it.

In the internet of things everything will be programmable, everything will be monitored and measured and data will be used to optimise performance.

The bad news is that many jobs will be replaced by robots, the good news is that new jobs will be created and the need for digital talent will be great.

Homes

Jobs will be created in the smart home industry, now this is an area which is going to be huge.

Just think of a home which can be controlled by your mobile device, whilst you’re on the train you can turn off any lights you left on, set the security alarm, regulate the heating and even check that there’s enough salad in the fridge.

The rise of smart homes will require designers, programmers, security systems engineers, audio visual technicians and engineers and more.

Security

Many opportunities will arise in the area of security. Devices will be vulnerable to attacks, happy hackers (the opportunists) and  angry hackers who do not like change, who will do what they can to stop it. The data that will be collected will be colossal, just think how attractive all that information would be to a terrorist or anybody who was power hungry. Security specialists will be in demand, with everything connected to the internet and so much data being shared, people will be required to stop all potential threats.

Environmental

From smart thermostats to machine-to-machine communications to improve rubbish collection, recycling, CO2 emissions and waste water. Monitoring, measuring, analysing, management are some of the jobs required. Perhaps work in environmental management which may include what solutions to put in place for discarded electronic equipment as IOT devices take over or work in landslide prevention, monitoring soil moisture and vibrations or work in the area of air pollution.

Traffic

What about being able to warn people on the motorway to get off at the next junction because there’s been an oil spillage and now the traffic is building up. Sound exciting? Roads will be equipped with sensors providing data to an operations centre which is then posted out to boards along the motorway and direct to cars warning drivers. The vision is an “Intelligent Transport System” where eventually cars are talking to cars! Does that sound exciting enough for you?

Marketing

With so much data available on our purchasing habits whether that’s done by us or automatically by our devices, it’s there in real time to be analysed immediately. Marketing skilled individuals will be required who can use the data, understand exactly who the customer is, their habits and where to source them, create bespoke services, products and messages for that customer. For example: messaging customers on their birthdays ( a video of their favourite boutique singing happy birthday to them will definitely build loyalty!), Messaging a customer to let them know that they’re about to run out of toilet roll, knowing a potential customer is looking for a handbag to match the shoes she bought last week, you’re job is to lead that potential customer to the handbag. Skilled marketing people will understand about how giving one customer an amazing experience will generate its own PR to attract more customers.

Farming

Another area to change and grow is farming. Smart farming will become a buzzword, automatic distribution of water and fertilizer will increase efficiency and eventually vertical farming will be the norm, it will be cool to be a "vertical farmer"

Research firm Gartner, predicts by 2020 there will be 26bn connected objects, more than three times the number of smartphones, tablets and PCs.

Currently there are just 300,000 developers contributing to the Internet of Things ( report from VisionMobile projects ). It’s predicted that by 2020 millions of developers alone will be needed for the era called The Internet Of Things!

Developers where are you? You’re going to be needed!
