Jobhop Jobhop's blog : Tattooed And Talented With Holly Massingham
The second in our Tattooed and Talented series
Following on from our Tattooed and Talented post about Claire Shepherd, we promised you more tattooed and talented people, so today we're chatting to Holly Massingham
Hi Holly, thanks for chatting with the Jobhop community.
When did you get your first tattoo?
It was May 2010
What was it?
3 Holly leaves on the back of my neck.
Is there a story behind any of your tattoos?
Some of my tattoos have meanings or a story but not all of them do.
Did you ever think that your tattoos could get in the way of your career?
I was always told that tattoos could affect my career, but I never thought anything of it. I thought people would see the good in what I do and take me as I am, as my tattoos shouldn't affect my work.
What job do you currently do?
I work in a special needs school as a lead ta in an autism specialist unit.
Would you be put off applying for a job if you'd heard they'd been negative about tattoos?
It would put me off personally. I find it quite hurtful that someone can judge over tattoos, and would feel upset that they wouldn't offer me the job because of them.
1 in 3 young adults now have tattoos, what do you say to employers who still have old fashioned views on tattoos?
I understand that everyone has their own opinion and they're entitled to it, however times have changed. Just because my arms are colourful and tattooed doesn't mean I'm not able to do the job, and if they don't like them fair enough, you can politely request your staff to cover them and most people will.
How many tattoos do you now have?
Ohh, 14 ish but I have a sleeve, so it depends on how you count them.
Are you going to get any more?
Oh definitely!! I would like a back piece and my other sleeve finished but my list is never ending!
If somebody is thinking about getting a tattoo but is worried about being discriminated against in the job world, what advice would you give?
If you're unsure, don't rush it! If you want one but are still concerned get it somewhere you can cover it, yet still appreciate it. If still in doubt check with your employer or contract if you want it visible, you never know they may have one themselves!!
Thank you for chatting with us today Holly.. If any Jobhoppers want to ask you any questions where's the best place to reach you?
