Jobhop Jobhop's blog : Take Your Dog To Work And Be More Productive

Do you take your dog to work? Have you thought about taking your dog to work?

Maybe your employer isn’t too keen.  If they knew that their employees would be a lot more productive if they took their dogs to work they may be swayed on the idea.

But how can a few dogs in the workplace result in extra productivity?

Happiness

We tend to become a lot happier around dogs, a bit like when we see babies.

Dogs make the workplace much happier. For example: Perhaps the day didn’t go as planned and you’re feeling a bit grumpy but that could change within a second when you see a cute labrador wagging it’s tail as you start to march across the office. Your stomping march soon stops as the labrador’s tail starts wagging faster as you get nearer. Where’s  all the grumpiness now? Vanished, all because of a cute labrador wagging its tail. So if you need to turn your daily work frown upside down be sure to work in a dog friendly environment.

Stress

Stress decreases when you have dogs in the workplace. This study shows the effect that dogs have on stress whilst at the work place. When you stroke your dog you release a hormone called oxytocin which increases self confidence and reduces stress levels! If there’s some people in the office who haven’t got a dog, don’t be selfish, let them de-stress by inviting them to stroke your dog.

Collaboration

Just like parents at the school gates grouping together and helping one another because their children are the common bond, the same happens with dog owners. More chat naturally happens because of the a common interest. When you have a common bond with someone it naturally makes the relationship stronger and you will naturally want to be more helpful to one another.

More happiness, less stress and a lot more collaboration going on will boost productivity, when everyone feels great then great work is produced. Also if you’re a workaholic then taking your dog to work will force you to have breaks because your dog needs to go to the toilet, you may be able to hold all day ( which is bad for you ) but your dog wont be able to. Breaks are a good thing as you allow yourself time to recharge which will help you produce better work results.

Before taking your dog into work there are some basic guidelines to follow:

  • Firstly make sure you’re allowed to
  • Get all vaccinations up to date
  • Make sure your dog knows basic commands
  • Make sure your dog is toilet trained
  • Equip your dog with a harness
  • Get an office dog bed or dog crate to leave at work
  • Take some of your dogs favourite toys

Some great companies who are super dog friendly are Google, Amazon, Facebook, Ben & Jerry’s and Zynga even has its own barking lot for break times!

We’d love to know if you take your dog to work or if your employer is about to create a dog friendly work place.
