That's right, employers want candidates with social media skills! 

Just recently Moz and Fractl analyzed 75,315 job listings posted on Indeed.com containing digital marketing keywords. The researchers looked at which job titles appeared most frequently, the keyword with the largest number of job listings was “social media”. Employers are waking up to the fact that social media isn’t a fad, it’s not going away, it’s how people communicate now and it’s evolving at an alarming rate.

The numbers on the social media platforms say it all:

Facebook 1.4 billion users

Twitter      316 million

Instagram 300 million

Google+   300 million

That’s just 4 of the platforms, to look at the many others and how many active users they have pop over to statista.com   

Panic is setting in, if companies are to survive then they need to hire people who understand social media, who are agile enough to adapt to its constant changes, as well as all the new platforms and tools.

The social savvy, agile employee will be able to chat to people on many different social media platforms, always remain social, build relationships and have the ability to convert connections into customers, this takes a skilled person.

Understanding social media as well as understanding business is valuable to many businesses, usually it’s the case of someone knowing just one or the other.

Someone who has the social and business mix will get bombarded with job offers, they’ll be in demand.

Could someone be social media savvy but not business savvy and still be in demand?

Yes, many places are keen to recruit social media savvy candidates and will provide training to develop other skills.

Some companies also do mentor to mentor schemes where business savvy employees get to mentor social media savvy employees and visa versa.

Because these days customers research online before most purchases are done... “Good communication skills required” isn’t only about communicating with consumers offline, a lot of that initial communication is done online and someone with good online social and social media skills are needed to hook the customer, it’s definitely a special skill, one that businesses want and need.
