Since records started (1971) we now have more people in employment than ever before, of course population is growing at a rapid rate, with more living in the U.K.
Unemployment is now at 2.53million, it fell by 50,000
Of course the London Olympics helped with hiring people for a while during the games. The Olympic organisers said the games took on about 6,000 paid staff, up to 70,000 volunteers and 100,000 contractors
Apart from the help from the London Olympics could Britain’s economy be on the move? It seems that employers are taking on more staff, which is optimistic.
A lot of the figures have been boosted by people in part time work and there have been comments that suggest these people would rather be in full time positions. That may be the case, but the future of the working life is changing. It’s now becoming more common to be in a part time role or two with a bit of freelancing thrown into the mix. Richard Maun an International careers speaker and author calls it “The Modern Career” I agree, times are changing and the ones that are adaptable will be the ones that survive.
There have been many puzzled economists wondering how the labour market can be so resilient in a recession and I do think it is because of the “modern career mindset”. Many people have taken on jobs that they wouldn’t normally consider and using that as their core income whilst freelancing to build up another source of income which ideally would become their core once things begin to settle.
Employers have also battled to keep staff by being totally transparent with them. Instead of shedding jobs, employers and staff have got their heads together collaboratively to work out plans which could include reducing working hours or reducing wages so to keep employment. Here again there are people that have accepted that and with the blessing of their employers are freelancing to make the difference.
The more people accept that times are changing and there’s a way of surviving by being adaptable then there’s a chance.
Some surveys have indicated that employers are planning to step up hiring in the coming months which is very positive despite an uncertain economy. It maybe just a case of doing two part time jobs before you hop to a full time role, whilst freelancing a bit and fulfilling a short term contract! It’s now a different type of employment.
