Jobhop Jobhop's blog : Jobseekers, Are You Part Of A Talent Community

Jobhop Jobhop's blog

Once you’ve drilled down, you know what you want to do and who you want to work for or the types of places you’d like to work at, you’ll need to work your way into their talent community.

A community is a collection of people who come together to chat, they could be employees, suppliers, brand ambassadors, company directors, friends of the company directors etc

When a community is created with the notion to engage with passive & active candidates and current employees it’s called a talent community.

A community is always engaging, collaborative with a common interest to share great content between each other. The community s engaged via social media ( of course! ) rather than any other method.

Once you’re in the community you’ll have the opportunity to network directly with employers, internal recruiters and with people who could put a word in for you, remember 80% of jobs are not advertised, it’s who you know.

It makes sense for a company to create these communities as they attract future candidates, they get a better quality of candidate, they don’t have to rely on ineffective job boards and less money is spent on recruitment overall.

Remember that a community is about the people and not the platform, so if you happen chat to a recruiter on Twitter that doesn’t mean you’re in a community.

So where do you find out about these communities?

Website

Their website is probably the best starting point, if they’re a company that understands social they will have where you can connect with them across the internet on their website homepage.

You would hope to see follow us on Twitter, like us on Facebook, connect with us on Linkedin, join us on Googleplus & so on.

If they’re a company who are ahead of their competitors they’ll have designated career communities where you can chat with them just about careers, job openings, future company developments etc.. these are commonly known as talent communities. Shell Global makes it easy for potential candidates to join their talent community.  Some companies will use their website to broadcast certain meet ups and chats for their community. If you can’t find where to find them on the social networks from looking at their website, don’t despair. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not active, it may just mean they haven’t connected the dots yet. Sometimes you’ll find some companies are social on the networks but do not realise the importance of their own website.

Blog

Does the company have a blog? If their blog is on their website then that’s relatively easy, some companies host their blog elsewhere and you might have to search for it. Subscribe to their blog, be active with your comments & get connected to others who comment, they will probably lead you to the community where the real action takes place.

Email

Perhaps you’ve had email correspondence with your dream employer already, if you have check the signature of the email, does it say where to follow them? You’ll probably get the usual like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, but some companies will have their own dedicated careers Twitter account & Facebook page and this is where you’d ideally like to hang out with them.

Investigating

You may have to become an investigator & start searching for them on the different social networking platforms. Once you find them remember that doesn’t mean you’re in their community, you have to watch their activity. Do they have a company chat on a certain day of the week? Are they involved in other Twitter chats, do they hold webinars, discussions on Linkedin or Google hangouts, only when you and others are turning up together at the same time on the same platforms, chatting about the same things are you part of that community.
