Jobhop Jobhop's blog : Is Social Media Ruining Your Chance of a Promotion?

Do you wonder why you’ve been overlooked for that promotion?

Maybe you find it happens regularly.

Is social media ruining your chances of promotion? The truth is that it could be.

More and more employers are checking up on their staffs’ social media accounts to see if the messages they’re sharing about themselves could reflect badly on the company.

Here are some of the ways your social media could be ruining your chances of promotion and things to do to prevent it.

Think About the Photos You Post

Do you regularly share photos of your nights out with friends? While there shouldn’t be anything wrong with this, it could give a bad impression should an investor, customer or other business linked to your employer find you and your photo album titled “Wild nights out”. Employers want people who give off good impressions in all walks of life.

The next time you’re tagged in a compromising photo, hide it from your timeline so it doesn’t show. You can also set your photo privacy settings so only a selected few people can see them. I would recommend only let close family see them and remember anyone can screen shot a photo and put it back on the internet.

Watch Out for Your Status Updates

Think about what you say before you post it. You may want to rant about how bad your day at work was and how awful that client was, but it does not make you look good in the eyes of the company. It could even be against your contract with the workplace.

Before you post something, question yourself about how it makes you look. Would you say this to anyone in the street or is it something that stays behind closed doors? Yes, you may want to rant but that’s what your private journal is for!

Sharing What You’re Doing

Did you phone in sick? If so, you don’t want to post about how great the beach is or check yourself into a local restaurant. Your boss will see this and realise that you've put yourself before the company. It could get you into serious trouble.

If you’re going to phone in sick or organise working from home for the day, refrain from using social media unless you are posting content on behalf of your company.

Social media can get you in a lot of trouble, and it could be the reason you’re missing out on the promotions. Think how you look to an employer when they see the status updates and photos you share, would you give yourself a promotion?
