Jobhop Jobhop's blog : Is It Time The 9-5pm Working Day Died
Why does the working day have to be 9 – 5pm?
The traditional work hours in England have always been 9 – 5pm, but why? Generally speaking the average work hours for an employee of a big company are around 40 to 44 hours per week. Of course some work more and some work less but why is the phrase “9-5” still used to describe a conventional, everyday job? And even more importantly why does anyone still do the 9-5 shift? Is 9-5pm working slowly dying a death?
Technology
The world is never asleep, there is always a chance to communicate with someone in the world with the advanced technology we use in our every day lives. Whether you use technology for business purposes or not it is always there for us. So if technology is at hand 24/7 why are we so structured in working the 9-5 shift at the traditional office? We need to make the most of what we can do with technology at the optimum time for business. In theory we have the whole word in front of us, we are globally connected, when we’re asleep others are awake. What’s the use of being in an office between 9-5 when you could be on your own device working at optimum times for you and the business, in an environment that is more suited to you. That environment could be at home, this cuts down on travelling time and cost for transport to & from the office. This could have positive results for the business, perhaps they could have smaller premises and encourage hot desking or small satellite offices around the country with meetings via Google hangouts, all adding to a reduction in expenditure.
Individual Needs
To this day we are not part robot and we all function better at different times . Someone may be their most productive at 8pm in the evening and not wide awake at 9am in the morning, yet businesses seem to think everyone is productive between 9am -5pm. Perhaps you’re someone who is their most productive at 2am in the morning, unfortunately I think you may struggle finding an office job which requires you in at that time, and that’s the problem. Companies need to find a method which allows employees to work at their most productive hours. But it’s not only the employees, what about your consumers? For some 9-5 businesses their customers are most active online after 6pm but they can’t ask any questions about what product they wish to buy because everyone went home at 5pm!
Lifestyle
The average age for an individual leaving home is an astonishing 30 years old, now put yourself in that persons shoes; You enjoy where you work, live at home with your parents and another night in watching T.V with the parents will send you doolally. What if your work place catered for the many 30year olds who are happy to carry on working after hours, because they prefer to be in a cool environment enjoying the work that they do, why do they have to go home at 5pm?
The future workplace must be able to offer flexibilty all round to get the maximum from their employees.
