Doors maybe closed however by strategically networking you may get a few of those doors opened. What magazine, paper, radio station, news channel do you want to work at? Who’s the decision makers? Who works there? Draw up a hit list of all the names you know and then start sourcing them on the social media platforms.

Write a blog if you seriously want to get a journalist job, if you haven’t got a blog then sorry I don’t believe that you’re determined to be a journalist. Whatever your interest is, you should be posting regular content to your blog. Normally I would suggest once a week, however to be noticed in this field I have no hesitation in saying to you to get posting daily. You have to do it because your competition will be. Many people have been found through their blogs, make sure yours stands out and use the social media sites to tell everyone about it. Offer to guest blog on other peoples blogs, this will provide you with a link back to your blog and put you in front a new audience.

Twitter

Freelance on Twitter and use it as a source for new stories. Tap into influencers on the network and see what they’re saying. If for example the area that excites you the most is fashion or cars, then tap into the thought leaders within that arena, check out what they’re having to say. Network with other journalists on #Journorequest and watch what they’re doing, get some tips from them.
