Interviewers note:

We regularly interview people to find out about their career and what journey they went on to get where they are today.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Morgan Holden about how he got a career in sales and what a typical day for a senior sales consultant would be.

Hi Morgan, What is your job title?

I'm a senior sales consultant at C20 Media Ltd

What does a normal day involve?

I can be doing different things from day today. The main aspect of my job is identifying potential clients, researching to ensure they are suitable, making contact with key decision and selling our marketing, branding and lead generation services.

The rest of my time is taken up with client visits, on going account management, credit control, researching potential new industries & projects and I always find time for a coffee.

Are you passionate about your work?

Yes, I love sales! I have had the chance to work with companies of all different sizes and met some great people. The feeling of signing a new client which 2 weeks previously you had never spoken to is great. I never get bored as there is always something to do and the harder you work the greater the rewards.

How did you get to do what you do?

I first started in sales at a well known insurance company. The job was up selling additional cover to customers that already had a policy with us. It was hard at first but every call was an opportunity to perfect my skills and within a few months I had cracked it and was the top performer earning some great bonuses. I was hooked on sales from then on.

Had you always intended to follow this career?

No. I am actually a qualified roof tiler. After 3 or 4 winters of extreme cold, lugging thousands of tiles up ladders and nearly falling of roofs I decided to call it a day. I saw an ad for telesales agents, no experience needed and never looked back.

What advice would you give someone who was hoping to do the same type of job?

Stick at it!!! If sales is what you truly want to do then put in the time and effort and the rewards will follow. In my first couple of months I was useless, but the prospect of a frosty roof in December kept me going.

Do you consider the culture of any company you work for to be important?

The culture within a company is very important. Because the job requires such a massive amount of self motivation, having a good team around you and a company that shares your views or aspirations can allow you to focus on the job in hand, safe in the knowledge you are all moving in the same direction.

One for fun..What’s your favourite hashtag and why?

#getofftwitter and get on with some work.  I was managing a call centre which had previously been poorly managed, lets just say the staff were more interested in social media than being on the phones.

Thank you Morgan for a great interview
