Jobhop Jobhop's blog : How Can Digital Day Help The Born Digital?

Jobhop Jobhop's blog

November the 17th was “Digital day”. Now in its 4th year Digital Day aims to reach out to students across the UK, but how can this particular day help students who were “born digital”?

The born digital have been born into and raised in a digital world, they’re also known as digital natives, digital is just natural to them.

They study, work, play, write and interact in ways that someone my age ( sshhh, not telling you) never did when I was young.

The born digital can text on their mobiles at super speeds, play video games at crazy speeds, both tasks done whilst eating! They know exactly what to do when mum or dad go into meltdown because their computer screen freezes, they can also do all their homework whilst listening to a podcast...now that’s skill!!

The born digital are changing the world as we know it.

So how can Digital Day Help The Born Digital?

Many students don’t even realise that their natural digital abilities are sought after skills. They don’t know that businesses are crying out for their skills.

When I speak to students and tell them that they can get jobs where they get to tweet, instagram, Facebook, Youtube etc each day they look at me as if I’m pulling their leg!

When a serious gamer is told that they can get a job user testing games, they can’t believe it. When an art student is told that they could get a job designing for video games, they start to see many more possibilities for their skills in an ever growing industry.

When you talk to the students about being cyber warriors the digital world becomes exciting. When you tell them about the employers who need people like them, they’re excited that their digital knowledge and skills can earn them money.

Digital Day is one day where digital agencies and sites like Jobhop.co.uk speak with students across the UK and show them the opportunities out there for them. Many teachers don’t realise the digital job possibilities so the message has to get to to the students via people already immersed in digital.

It’s imperative that we get this message out to the students because UK businesses are going to have to fill a lot of digital job vacancies. By 2017 it is now estimated that there will be 1.1 million digital job vacancies to fill. Students need to know that their natural digital skills are required, they also need to know what jobs are going to be available to them when they start thinking about employment.

Jobhop.co.uk preach about the digital skills gap daily, we constantly reach out to students to guide them and give them advice about digital jobs.

We aim to do lots more around this work and are currently running a Kickstarter campaign to create communities on the site. Once Jobhop has the communities it will become a lot easier for students to engage with employers direct. They can use the communities to find about the company culture, speak with employees who work there, build relationships, find out about future vacancies etc... We believe communities is the key to making employment human.

Please join in and make it happen  The Jobhop Kickstarter Campaign
