Jobhop Jobhop's blog : Hello Recruiting Team Meet The Marketing Team
Are you in the recruiting team? Have you met the marketing team? Or do you just pass on the stairs?
How many times must I hear that the recruiting team give the job list to the marketing team and they tweet the jobs out? That’s the only time they ever chat to one another, madness!
It has to stop! Now!
Recruiting and marketing have to work together, they have to understand one another and they need to learn to flow together.
Marketing can’t just be about attracting customers anymore it has to be about attracting candidates as well. Customer marketing and candidate marketing must compliment each other, the values of the brand should shine through for both, there mustn’t be any confusion.
Employer brand
The recruiting team and the marketing team need to get people to recognise the employer brand, a good employer brand will attract great candidates.
Firstly information should be collected from employees, they own the employer brand, they will tell you the truth about the employer brand.
A good exercise is the one word exercise. This is where you say the company name and the employee shouts out the first word that comes into their head, this exercise can be quite an eye opener.
Let’s say honest, training, donuts and busy were the words, we have now something to go on. There will be many candidates who want to work for an honest company, one that keeps its promises, one that’s transparent with its employees.
Training: here at Jobhop.co.uk we know how important training is to employees, our research shows that 78% said they would look for another job if the training was poor, bingo! Your training is great so make sure you shout that from the roof tops.
Donuts: fantastic... your employees love the donuts given out at all meetings, meetings are fun and everyone is encouraged to contribute with their ideas.
Busy: so there’s lots happening, never a dull moment, lots of chatter, of course that may not suit everyone out there but you wouldn’t employ those people because they wouldn’t fit in. The beauty about marketing your employer brand is that you’ll only attract the right people, it’s not going to attract someone who likes a quiet environment. When recruiting and marketing work together the employer brand will shine.
Job adverts
Let’s face it, the recruiting team always do a great factual job description in their adverts, always running through the points 1- 50. The problem is other companies are putting out the same job description in their adverts, all the adverts look the same, they say the same thing and they’re boring. It’s time to sit down with the marketing team, burn the template and come up with something that’s going to demand attention immediately, something which will make the best candidates apply.
Recruiters will know exactly who they’re targeting and marketing can put a magic spin on the advert to make it interesting. For example, your company may need more web developers, so perhaps the job advert should be in code. It will only be understood by web developers, it should give them a challenge, they love a challenge, it should be fun and you should be remembered for it. The beauty about this is that even if a web developer isn’t looking for a new job at that particular moment in time, they will still do the code challenge, they wont be able to ignore it. That person may choose to work for you in the future because of that advert. See what happens when recruiting and marketing work together!
Going back to the beginning when I mentioned about the recruitment teamt giving the marketing team the jobs to “tweet out” This makes me shudder! First the mindset has to change, Twitter isn’t there just to post jobs on, it isn’t a job board. That doesn’t mean jobs can’t be tweeted, it just means that they shouldn’t be the only tweets.
When recruiting and marketing work together that's when the magic happens!
Instead of just tweeting jobs out, tweet images of your smiling employees in their job roles. Tweet videos of your employees talking about why they love working there.
Listen out for anyone talking about your company and reply to them immediately, Twitter works best when there’s a two way conversation happening. Use the right hashtags to reach potential candidates. Create your own hashtag for a regular career chat and tweet with the people who are interested in your employer brand. All of this and more can be hugely successful but only when recruiting and marketing collaborate.
In future don’t just pass each other on the stairs, work together and make magic!
