Jobhop Jobhop's blog : Get A Digital Marketing Job In 6 Steps

Jobhop Jobhop's blog

That's right, you did read right, you could get a digital marketing job in just 6 steps, what I omitted though is the word easy, it’s not get a digital marketing job in 6 easy steps!

There’s no magic wand that’s going to get you a digital marketing job, you’re the one who will have to put the work in, however these six steps should help you achieve your goal.

The good news for you is that if you’re good then you’re in demand, the need for digital marketing talent has grown and now there’s a shortage of skilled candidates for the job roles.

Step 1

Know what digital marketing job you want:

Even if you have extraordinary powers you’re not going to be amazing at every digital marketing role. If you just call yourself a “digital marketing person” and do not specify, or worse still say that you “just do everything digital” then you seriously need to go back to the drawing board and start to niche yourself. Here’s some examples of the many digital marketing jobs there are:

  • Mobile marketing
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Digital strategy
  • Email marketing
  • Search engine optimisation
  • Ecommerce
  • Social media marketing
  • Community manager
  • Digital advertising
  • Content marketing
  • Automated marketing

Once you know what area you specialise in then get super good at it, read everything, learn from the best and practise everything you learn on human guinea pigs. Build up your portfolio by initially offering your services for free, then at a reduced rate to get experience.

Once a company knows you specialise in a certain area and you have proof of experience then doors of opportunity will open for you.

Step 2

Know what type of company you want to work for:

Once you know what type of company you want to work for you give yourself an instant hike up the career ladder. Many people think that they shouldn’t “limit” themselves to a particular skill or a particular type of company, what they fail to realise is that they make themselves more desirable if they do.

For example: Let’s say Chris specialises in digital advertising and she wants to work for a motor company. Let’s say Chris niches again and wants to specialise in the middle of the road range, Ford, Nissan and possibly Volkswagen. Chris learns everything there is to know about the brand, the car models, their customers. Chris knows what makes their customers tick, she knows what those customers are talking about, she knows where their future customer will be coming from, she trains herself on sourcing and attracting those customers.

As I said there’s a shortage of digital talent, there’s even a bigger shortage of talent who understand digital and a particular industry!

If you choose a job you know you’re going to love, I promise you it will love you right back!

Step 3

Connect:

Now make sure you target the companies that you ideally want to work for and connect with everyone who posts from there, the directors, the employees and the suppliers.

You can target these people on linkedin, search for the company and see who’s connected to it. You can also look for their Twitter name in their contact details, once you have this connect with them on Twitter as well. It’s easier to strike up engaging conversations on Twitter, more so than Linkedin which can be a bit formal. Check platforms like Jobhop, Instagram and Facebook, you might find some platforms work better for relationship building for you.

Use tools like 360 social or Discoverly to make it easier to connect with them.

Connecting makes sense because people rather employ someone they already know or who’s been referred to them, it’s a more reliable form of recruiting and much cheaper than using an agency or advertising. Connecting also opens more doors to different opportunities for you, you never know who knows who!

Step 4

Engage

Now that you’ve connected it doesn’t stop there you need to be engaging. Comment on posts, share and RT, ask some questions as well as answer some. If the digital job you want is a community manager role then you need to be seen and known for being social in your chosen community.

Step 5

Create

Work like crazy, create content and case studies. Create a destination where people can come and see your work. This can be your own site or a platform for your niche, where you can showcase your portfolio. If you want to work in digital marketing then your aim must be to attract and source people to view your work and talk about it. The more you're known and your work is known then the more you’ll be mentioned when someone is looking for someone with your skills.

Step 6

Be brave

You’ve made the right connections, you’ve regularly engaged with them, now it’s time to get brave.

Arrange a skype call to find out more about the company.

Write a blog post about the industry and ask them for a contributing quote.

Ask if you could pop into the company to have a look round.

Offer your services FOC for a month.

Create an industry related Pinterest board and invite them to pin.

Now's the time to get planning for a digital job

Don’t just read these steps and do nothing, you’ll only get your digital marketing job if you make it happen! Now for ACTION.
