Jobhop Jobhop's blog : Digital Dirt: 10 Things You Mustn’t Do When Job Seeking

Jobhop Jobhop's blog

I’m constantly saying to Job seekers “Clean Up Digital Dirt”

Job seekers clean up that digital dirt!

You’ve applied for a job. What do 8 out of 10 employers do before inviting you to an interview?

Yep you’ve guessed it, they’ll check you out online.

It’s too easy for them not to.

What you say online, on networks, in groups, forums, the blogs you write, the photos you post can impact your job search in a positive or negative way.

Some might say “ they shouldn’t be checking me out” Maybe not but put yourself in the employers shoes, they want the best for their company and if it’s a recruiter checking you out, they want the best for their client because they are their client’s personal shopper. If you put it out there you’re inviting people to read it!

If you have a dirty social media footprint on line then you really must clean it up.

10 things jobseekers mustn’t do online

  1. Post naked, drunk photos or any photos that could go against you
  2. Join groups that could really jeopordise getting an interview
  3. Blog about how you like to take drugs, how much you hate working or how life is a bitch
  4. Video yourself doing something that could really come back to haunt you
  5. Podcast political or religious rants
  6. Continuously post comments about how depressed you are and how your love life is shit
  7. Spell badly
  8. Become friends with someone from the “Most Wanted” list
  9. Tweet  “Applied for a crap job but will do anything for the time being”
  10. Let so called friends tag you in  their hen night/ stag do photos

If you’re not sure where to start I suggest Googling your name first
