A contagious company culture can be good or bad.

When you have a good contagious company culture social will flow, but social doesn’t flow when it’s a bad company culture. 

So what does that mean? 

Let’s take a bad company culture first

  • Employees clock watch
  • A lot of blaming someone else 
  • Employees are off sick a lot 
  • Customer service is poor 
  • Training is ...what training? 
  • Some employees really don’t get on with each other
  • Somebody said on Twitter that they hated their job and so on! 

Now let’s take a good company culture  

  • Employees can’t wait to start work 
  • They work well together
  • If they’re feeling unwell they have time out, it’s accepted ..the funny thing is they’re hardly ever ill 
  • Employees are happy 
  • Customer service is great, customers are really happy 
  • Employees socialise with each other after work 
  • Everyone is involved in the local community
  • Lots of tweets about how they love their job 

The easiest way to have a good contagious company culture is to start the business with the intended culture in mind. There’s a problem though, many businesses don’t start with their intended culture in mind and it’s only when they’ve got the company culture that they don’t want, is when they then realise what type of company culture they do want.  

What do you do if you’ve got a company culture you don’t want and you need to change it?

I wont lie to you, it’s not easy. If you have employees who’s daily motto is “That’s the way it is round here” or “ Don’t ask questions, just do it” or “ it’s ok no-one will notice’ or similar, then you’ve got your work cut out.

The good news is that with commitment and time it can be done. 

The next bit of good news is that once the company culture is great and social is flowing, the company will naturally attract great talent, retain great talent, cut recruitment costs, be more productive, customers will also be happier. 

The next part is up to you... You have to take action. I always say this part is a bit like when you take up jogging or keep fit, to start you have to put on your trainers!
