Connect To Employers Using Social Media... Can you?

Social media is perfect for many things. You can catch up on the latest gossip, read news articles and connect with potential employers. Wait, what about using it to connect with potential employers?

Don’t find this surprising but employers are using social media every day and you’ve got every opportunity to chat with them. However, to improve your chances of being hired, you need to be courteous and careful. Here are some tips to help you connect and get hired.

  • Connect Before You Contact

Being a good follower is really important if you want to find employment with a specific company. It doesn’t matter which type of social media platform you use, you need to connect first, then follow some of their posts. Re-tweet them on Twitter, share and comment on them on Facebook and +1 them on Google+.

You will learn much more about a company by ‘listening’ to them at first. After a while, start commenting and engaging, regular communication will make the employer start to take notice of you, by the time you contact them about job vacancies you won’t be a complete nobody. They’ll be more receptive to your message, more inclined to meet you, which is great news and makes opening doors to opportunities easier.

  • Shyness Will Not Get You Anywhere

If you were at a networking event, you wouldn’t stand in the corner waiting for someone to talk to you. Those who do are those who don’t get hired! The same applies to social media. It pays to be sociable. The trick is to ask the right questions and start the right conversations.

After following and engaging with the employer, you can then ask them about job opportunities, ask them if you can forward a link to your online CV to them. Make sure your online professional profile is attractive to the employer when they come to visit it.

  • Image is everything

You want to make the best first impression. If you’re going to use your profile to connect to employers, make sure it’s suitable. Stop any swearing, make sure your status updates and tweets are valuable and worthwhile. It’s also worth tidying up those photos—get rid of or hide those from the weekend out on the town.

Use social media to your advantage to find employment today. Try to stick to the guidelines above, get networking and don’t miss out on any opportunities.
