There's too many Christmas social media mistakes!

Over the Christmas period there’s always the social media mishaps, it happens every year.
Job hunting doesn’t stop when it comes to the holiday season. The problem is many people, especially college students and young adults, will feel like they can relax. Yes, this is a time to relax, but watch out for these common — and sometimes employment-threatening — Christmas social media mistakes.

Making Your Profiles Available to All

It’s important to keep your security settings updated. Your Facebook can be viewed by anyone and everyone, if you let it. Take some time now to double check your security and privacy on all the social media sites that you’re active on. There are some that benefit from being completely visible, such as LinkedIn, however with Facebook you may want to keep certain parts of it private, that could be your Christmas 2013 photo album.

Posting Those Drunken Holiday Photos

The Christmas season is full of office parties, nights out with friends, and a lot of alcohol. While you want to have fun and let your hair down, your social media profiles are not the place to share all your drunken antics. The good thing about Facebook is that you can limit the people who see your photos, but it is often better to be safe than sorry and forego posting them all together. If you want photos of the office party on, post only those that don’t show you drunk or out of control.

Commenting About the Bad Behaviour

There will be colleagues that make a mistake at the Christmas party, or will get on your nerves throughout the year. This is not the time to start commenting about them. Whether you’re leaving, they’re leaving, or you think it’s a good time to make their behaviour known, it doesn’t look good on you. Future employers will see those comments and wonder what you will say about their workplace.

Posting While Drunk

If you’ve had too much to drink, put the social media down. Drunken status updates, tweets or messages are often embarrassing, and sometimes crude. You want to give the best impression possible. Even if you think your accounts are set to private, it is best to avoid posting while you’ve had that one too many.

Take some time to really think about the information you are sharing. Yes, the point of social media is to be social and talkative, but it can also have a negative effect. If there’s something you wouldn’t say directly to your boss or a colleague, then the social media platforms are not the place for you to broadcast it either.

Over the Christmas period don’t just think once before posting think twice!
