Jobhop Jobhop's blog : Are You Screwing Up Your Chances With Selfies?

“The Year of the Selfie” If you’ve been in hiding a selfie is a picture that you take of yourself on your mobile & share it across the social media platforms.

Selfies are the in thing, the Oxford dictionary has made it an official word and it’s the most popular word of 2013! Selfie hasn’t made it into the Oxford Dictionary yet but it may well be included in the future.

Why do people do it? A few reasons: because everybody else is, because they think they look hot, because they think they look crap, natural, different, they want to shout look at me, look what I have, or it could be because they’re somewhere or with someone they want to share with others.

The problem occurs when you decide to look for a job or when less skilled people get head hunted and you don’t, it could be a selfie problem.

Let’s take both scenarios, recruiters or employers are going to check out your online presence, if there’s continuous selfies with you pouting from every angle you maybe considered a narcissist. A narcissist is someone who is self absorbed, preoccupied by themselves, they can also be the type of person who believes their above the rules and cannot deal with criticism, would an employer want somebody like that working for them?  Of course you maybe only sharing your selfies because everyone else is, but put yourself in the shoes of the employer or recruiter when it comes to employment, they’re probably going to think at best you’re a bit of a plonker.

What about sharing your selfie when you’re at special events, celebrations, car crashes or funerals? I did say the last two, if you’re shocked, good it means you haven’t done anything so silly, however selfies are becoming increasingly popular at all types of places. Do you think an employer would think twice if they saw a selfie taken in less than appropriate circumstances?  Do you think you could be thought of as disrespectful? I’ll answer that ..Yes

Nearly naked selfies are just as bad, selfies with bums, bare chests, tattooed boobs on show probably wont get you the job of your dreams, they might get shared round for a laugh though.

Do not get carried away with the selfie phenomenon, remember who can see them, marketing people can use them as you’ve made it the property of whatever platform you’re sharing it on and maybe even more disturbing there are some people who digitally manipulate them, then share them all over again.
