5 Ways Employers Can Use Video To Attract Candidates

The hot topic of the day is video; it seems that everyone you talk to is working out their video marketing strategy. It’s predicted that by 2019 80% of internet traffic will be to videos (Source: Cisco Visual Networking Index: Forecast and Methodology, 2014-2019 White Paper)  It’s not just Youtube anymore, everyone is trying to get a piece of the action. Facebook is serious about video, its users watch 8billion videos a day, and they’re not alone, Snapchat users also watch 8billion videos a day, that’s a lot of video content from just a few platforms!

The numbers are there; we’re all watching videos! Savvy businesses who want to attract more customers realise the power of video, but what about employers who want to attract talent? It’s a shame, but employers are missing a trick, many stick to their old methods and find it hard to change. They don’t think far enough ahead; they don’t think about attracting great candidates right now because they don’t need them right now. Many employers stick to their fire fighting methods, someone hands in their notice to leave and then all hell breaks loose trying to find a replacement, it doesn’t need to be like that.

Video can help to constantly attract great candidates, use it as part of your recruitment strategy.

Here are 5 ways you can use video to attract candidates:

The recruitment process

A video of the recruitment process puts an end to your candidate pondering by themselves with unanswered questions. The video can explain the selection process, how and where the interview will be, what type of questions will be asked, what’s expected, how long the interview will take and how long it takes to decide on the successful candidate. As well all that the video can explain where to park, what bus or train station is nearby, what to do when they get into reception, who will be interviewing them, as well as how they’d go about obtaining feedback afterwards.

A typical day

Candidates like to find out what a typical day is like, and there’s no better way than showing than with a video. A typical day could be a video about the daily activities of the organisation as a whole, or individual videos of employees explaining what a typical day for them is like.

What’s it like to work here?

This type of video showcases the company culture, the types of projects you collaborate on, the fun side of the job, the corporate social responsibility, even the location. People are willing to relocate for the right job at the right company so if the location is a great place to work, then promote it; location is never advertised enough.

Work with cool people

It’s the people that make a place, so turn your employees into video superstars. Let your employees talk about themselves, why they love to work there, what their interests are and even their favourite food. Remember like attracts like, candidates just like them will have a connection, the video makes people emotionally connect like nothing else. Humans tend to want to hang out with humans who have similar likes, dislikes, personality, hobbies, etc. If those same humans can work with people similar to them then even better, it starts to feel less like work, more like a place where a like-minded community come together to make amazing things happen!

The company story

Everyone loves a great story, how did it all start? Did it start from the table in the kitchen? Was it ten years ago when there were only two employees, but today there’s 100?

Telling the company story on video is a great way to hook potential candidates, people remember stories and a good one is easy to share.

Whatever type of video you opt for, remember to keep it short, two minutes win it, never more than that. Once your candidate has watched the video, what would you like them to do next? Always have a call to action, you want to capture their details, never lose a great candidate because you forgot a CTA.
