Jobhop Jobhop's blog : 5 Social Media Sins Committed By Employers

Jobhop Jobhop's blog

We often hear about social media sins done by jobseekers but what about social media sins committed by employers, what do some of these employers get so wrong?

Here we have 5 big juicy social media sins committed by employers everywhere!

Not being on social media

Not being on social media means the employer misses out on lots of opportunities. Digital talent is getting harder to come across, if an employer is still recruiting in the traditional sense and wants to wait for a CV to arrive then they’ll have serious problems keeping up with the competition.

Even if employers have a social media presence via their company social media team, they still miss an opportunity to let potential candidates emotionally connect with them if they don’t use it themselves.

Being on social media

Ok it contradicts the previous sin but some employers really should stay away from social media, they damage their own company brand.

For example, Michael O’ Leary CEO of Ryanair, once used Twitter to try and soften his brash public image. That didn’t exactly work, he failed to use the Twitter chat hashtag and worse than that he come across sexist and arrogant, the twitter chat did nothing to improve his image. Employers behaving badly on social media will not help the employer brand whatsoever.

Fails to respond

It’s no good when an employer uses social media but blatantly ignores anyone who tries to approach them. If an employer gets asked a question by a follower then they should have the decency to answer them. Let’s put it into a real life scenario, if whilst out at a networking event, someone who’s considering their job options asks the employer a question, let’s say it’s about “expansion plans” and the employer just ignores them, wouldn’t you agree that’s just down right rude! Who’d want to work for them?

Doesn’t let their employees use social media

A lot of questions need to asked about the employer who doesn’t allow their employees to use social media. Questions like:

  • Do they trust their employees?
  • Is the employer a control freak?
  • Is the company behind the times?
  • What is the employer trying to hide?
  • Why doesn’t the employer encourage a social culture?

An employer who doesn’t allow their employees to use social media is a sinner! ( Just my opinion)

Fails to provide social media training

Every employer should be responsible enough to make sure that their employees get social media training.

Employees should be shown how to communicate the company brand message across the social media platforms. All employees should be working together, towards the same mission and  feel comfortable enough to take to social media to engage with their customers. Every employer should be committed to creating a truly social culture, if they don’t then the employer is committing a social media sin against their employees!

So that’s just a few social media sins committed by many employers, if you’ve experienced any others, please spill the beans!
