Jobhop Jobhop's blog : 5 “Smart” People, 5 Not So Smart Social Media Posts
Are you social media smart?
We’ve all heard about an employee who’s posted their fab day out pictures on Instagram after calling into work sick, the employee who slated their boss on Facebook but forgot they were connected as friends, and the tweet that shouldn’t have chirped. There are also videos of restaurant employees doing nasty things to customers food and “Secret” Snapchat pics doing the rounds, you don’t need to look far to find lots of people who don’t think before posting.
What about the people who you’d think would have social media training? For some people, because of their positions you would expect them to have advisors at hand, like politicians and celebrities.
Adel admits that she has her tweets vetted before they’re sent out because in the past, when she used to drink she nearly put her foot in it a few times, then again if Adel did say something naughty no-one is going to sack her are they!
But some people are not as invincible as Adel, here are supposedly smart people who lost their jobs because of how they used social media.
The Racist Tweet
PR chief Justine Sacco ( Yes, I did say PR chief) tweeted that she was going to South Africa, followed by “Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding.I’m white!” By the time she had landed in South Africa, unbeknown to her the tweet had gone viral. As a welcome home gift, her employer sacked her.
The Snobby Tweet
Labour politician, Emily Thornberry, took a picture of a home proudly flying a couple of England flags and tweeted it. Now you might think, so what? But it was in the sneering way that she did it as if she was looking down on this person and everyone else who lived in Rochester. Many people were offended by the tweet and because of that Emily resigned.
The Homophobic Post
Adrian Smith, who worked for Trafford Housing Trust, voiced his opinion on same-sex marriage on Facebook. Because the housing trust was mentioned, it went against their equal opportunities policy so they had to take legal action. Other employees, who were friends of Adrian’s on Facebook were also offended by the comments.
Adrian wasn’t sacked but he was demoted and his salary slashed.
The Envious Post
Hr assistant, Stephanie Bonn got the sack after she complained about her boss getting £4,000 per an hour while she only got £7 per hour. Stephanie was disappointed about losing her job but insisted she hadn’t revealed anything confidential or controversial.
The Careless Tweet
Emma Way had a nice job in an accountancy firm until she knocked a cyclist with her car and tweeted about it. She tweeted “Definitely knocked a cyclist off his bike earlier - I have right of way, he doesn’t even pay road tax! #Bloodycyclists” Emma described her tweet as her “biggest regret” and rated it 11 out of 10 on the stupidity scale.
